A milestone birthday

Bruce reached another milestone today and was highly amused by some of the sarky cards and presents he received.  The age attributed to him on one card was out by a decade - fortunately in a flattering way.

Lunch in Binsoe

Tired or not, I wouldn’t have missed Kathleen’s lunch for anything.  Around a dozen hungry RWG members gathered at her cottage to enjoy the good food she laid before us and the opportunity to chat to each other without a set theme!

Homeward bound

Those of us making an early departure on the coach to Derby railway station got a big send off from the rest.  It was sad, of course, but I think most will be back next year for the Diamond Anniversary of the Writers’ Summer School.

The second stage of my journey home was enlivened by Joanna’s company.  We marvelled at what a small world it is.  Exact contemporaries and both born and brought up in Leeds, we discovered mutual friends, acquaintances and teenage haunts during the two hour drive.

Can it really be the last full day?

I attended the final parts of my chosen workshops and courses and went along to the AGM.  The catering staff of the Hayes had made a special effort for the last dinner of the week.  The RWG contingent of Audrey, Elizabeth and myself certainly enjoyed it.

The entertainment after dinner was hilarious - particularly Marion Hough’s take on Kenneth William’s Crêpe Suzette and John Lamont’s rendition of Pat Cooksey’s The Sick Note.  We sang the Swanwick anthem and Chairman Katy Clarke made very sure that we all knew the correct words to Auld Lang Syne before we were allowed to sing that!

A busy day

I attended Della Galton’s workshop on short stories for magazines and Lee Weatherly’s course on writing for children, as well as making time to hear readings by the TopWrite group of young people enrolled on creative writing courses.

The evening speaker, Jamie Rix, best known for his children’s stories, was very entertaining.  So was the Room 101 session afterwards, with John Lamont, Xanthe Wells and Martin Brocklebank telling VC Diana Wimbs what they would most like to make disappear.  Among the chosen items were seagulls, condiment sachets and everything to do with Harry Potter.
